FARM: Gicherori

BEHIND PRODUCTION
The Gicherori factory is located in Embu County, an area known for its high-altitude coffee farms and fertile volcanic soils. Smallholder farmers from nearby villages deliver their ripe cherries to this factory, where meticulous attention is given to every stage of processing.

The coffee is grown at an altitude of 1,600 meters, allowing cherries to ripen slowly, developing more complex flavors. Farmers in this region cultivate varieties like SL28, SL34, and Ruiru under shaded canopies, maintaining biodiversity and preserving the quality of the soil. The factory ensures that only the highest-quality cherries are processed, resulting in a coffee that embodies the dedication and tradition of the region.
LOCATION
The Gicherori factory is situated in Embu County, at the base of Mount Kenya. This location benefits from a temperate climate, abundant rainfall, and nutrient-rich volcanic soils. These factors combine to create ideal conditions for producing high-quality coffee with distinct flavor profiles.

Embu’s high elevation of 1,600 meters contributes to slower cherry development, enhancing the coffee’s sweetness and complexity. This, paired with the region's longstanding tradition of coffee cultivation, makes Gicherori a prime source of some of Kenya’s finest coffees.

Gicherori AA arrived to our roastery via EL CAFÉ, a company established in 2000 by Vasileios G. Anastasopoulos that is solely concerned in the coffee producing countries with discovering new coffee varieties on special farms.

Since then they supplie most of the largest coffee producing companies in Greece, by remaining as a dedicated green coffee import and trading company.

The washed process at Gicherori begins with farmers handpicking ripe cherries, which are then sorted to ensure only the best fruit proceeds to processing. After pulping, the beans are fermented for 24–48 hours, a stage that develops clarity and amplifies sweetness.

Following fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed and soaked in clean water to enhance their acidity and flavor balance. The coffee is then sun-dried on raised beds for 10–14 days. During this time, workers carefully turn the beans to ensure uniform drying and prevent defects. This meticulous process results in a coffee that is clean, sweet, and bursting with vibrant flavors.
